Chapter 15

Poseidon

We lost that fight. I’d come in the nick of time—X had been about to kill Elyse. I’d run him off, but there was no way we had won anything in this war. All I accomplished was buying us time, sparing one of Elyse’s lives.

Hers were so extremely precious. She only had a few. Thank Zeus she didn’t only have one like any other mortal or I would have lost her before finding her. She could only die two more times, and then I lost her forever. And that thought sat heavily on my chest.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I demanded, burning up on the inside with fury that she’d risk her life. My power crackled in the air around me, lifting the hairs on my arms.

Elyse looked surprised that I was upset, her eyes widening.

“What I was sent here to do,” she said simply, as if never once doubting her decision to place herself in danger.

“You could have died! What do you think this is? A game?” My voice climbed, and I gritted my teeth, reminding myself to hold back the rage.

“Excuse me?” she asked incredulously. Her anger was rising; I could feel it mix with mine until the air around us was tainted with colors of anger and rage. “I’m doing what I was born to do. Zeus didn’t make me this strong to have me just sit around.”

“You should have waited for backup,” I snapped.

“I had backup!” She pointed at Ares, staring at us, arms folded over his chest. “But he attacked X on his own and got slammed to the ground.” I followed her gaze to the hole in the ground where X had shown Ares that he wasn’t nearly as good as he thought he was.

“Don’t even get me started on him.” I huffed and stared at my trident. I was righteously pissed off that he had attacked X on his own. Idiot. Moron.

“Zeus gave you power, but you’re not a god, Elyse. You can still die.” I wanted to cry as the realization filled me that I could have lost her.

“And bounce back again.” She smirked.

“Only a few times and then it’s over!” Heat burned up my neck and over my ears, trembling with fury. The anger was rooted in fear—what if I lost her?—but I wasn’t going to admit to that.

“So you want me to sit back and let all this shit happen? When I could have done something about it? Because you’re worried that the final death will come too soon?” She studied me with narrowing eyes as if trying to read my thoughts, which was impossible.

Plus, my argument sounded pathetic when she said it like that, but what was I supposed to do? Congratulate her on not dying?

“I’m not saying you can’t fight,” I said. “I just want you to wait for backup. X is growing stronger, which means we need to work as a team.”

“I already told you I had backup.”

Ares sauntered toward us like he hadn’t just had his ass handed to him by Death himself.
